About Us

Certainty, Predictability & Peace of Mind

Have you ever received an invoice from your lawyer and questioned how you could possibly owe that much? Or why on earth your lawyer charged you for one tenth of an hour for your quick phone call? Sounds absurd, right? Well, you can thank the billable hour and that lawyer’s billing targets, likely imposed upon them by their firm. Believe it or not, this archaic billing practice is still used by almost all Calgary-based law firms. We know clients hate this – and guess what? So do we. Except only in the rarest of circumstances (i.e. complex and lengthy litigation which we will discuss with you in advance and happily work with you to arrive at a satisfactory solution that reflects your budget), we have forever banned, banished and outlawed the billable hour from our firm. Yep – good riddance, billable hour. We think this allows us to provide greater certainty, predictability, value and importantly, peace of mind for you, our clients who we work for. We work hard to put the client focus back in client-focused legal services and are proud to be Calgary’s first and only dedicated employment law firm to operate according to an easy-to-understand and transparent flat-fee structure. Our fees are pre-set and communicated to you up front – no surprises, hidden add-ons or departures from the amount we quote you. Allow us to focus on your legal matter without any distracting concerns about fees and invoices. That’s our promise to you – peace of mind.

Employment Law Evolved

We meet with you on your schedule – not ours. Our operating structure is designed to offer you unparalleled convenience, never before seen in Calgary’s employment law market. We’ll meet with you for breakfast or coffee before work, even if you’re an early bird and like your morning coffee at 6 a.m. – no joke. What about after work finishes, late into the evening? Or over the weekend? We have that covered, too. Even better, we come to you – at whatever location is most convenient. Because we are a virtual and cloud-based office, we don’t operate out of a fixed business location. You won’t find us in our high-priced ivory tower, perched high above downtown Calgary. Nor will you find us tucked away somewhere in a distant suburban shopping plaza. So, don’t worry about finding or paying for parking, fuel costs or battling traffic – that’s our responsibility. You have enough to worry about, so we’ll come to you. Are you tech savvy? If you prefer to talk to us via a secure online video chat platform – no worries, we do that, too. Our clients’ satisfaction means everything to us. After all, the practice of law is a service profession. We never forget that and stay true to our roots. You name it, we’ll take care of it.

Client-Focused Calgarians Serving Calgarians

No lawyers better understand the distinct needs of Calgary-based employees than life-long Calgarians. Our founding lawyer, Stephen, is a born and raised Calgarian. Stephen has witnessed the City grow, develop, prosper and, yes, suffer economically, first-hand; he’s been here through it all. Because of this, we are uniquely knowledgeable of the local labour market and regional dynamics, in a way no employment lawyer from Edmonton, Vancouver, Saskatoon, Toronto, Halifax or abroad can match. We live and breathe Calgary, keep our earnings here and reinvest in the local community. We are fully committed to Calgary’s well-being; which fundamentally depends on a healthy workforce – you. Let us work together in strengthening the local labour market and making our City a better place to live, work and play for all of us.

Top-Tier Education and Training

Our lawyers have received their legal training from some of Canada’s undisputed best and top-ranked law firms. We were academic high-achievers and graduated with our law degrees from some of the top Canadian law schools. We pass that significant investment made in us on to our clients – we are all about paying it forward to you. We believe this gives our clients the assurances and advantage of knowing their employment law matter is not only being attended to competently, but more importantly, effectively, efficiently and by high-quality legal counsel. Our clients are in good hands.

Employees First

We prioritize your well-being and only represent you – the employees, the people – and never act for management or employers. We are passionate about employee rights and don’t compromise this by ever representing an employer, just to make a buck. We are not one of those firms, because we believe “wearing two hats” is a conflict of interest. We always stay true to our principles, which translates into unmatched employee advocacy and representation. We guarantee it.

It’s your Money, Not Ours

Believe us, we know your finances may be tight right now. To accommodate this, we charge only reasonable flat-fees for our legal services, and don’t gouge you with high-priced consultation fees. We believe settlement funds belong to employees and should remain theirs, without exception. Have you ever heard of contingency fees? If so, forget about them now because we don’t and never will use them. We would rather you pay a reasonable fixed price at the front-end of our representation of you than an unreasonable percentage of any settlement we may negotiate or judgment we may obtain on your behalf. A common contingency fee in the employment law world generally amounts to between 20-30% of your funds becoming payable to your lawyer. On a $50,000 increase in severance, this amounts to $10-15,000 – in our view, that’s just excessive, any way you cut it. Especially because you’ll probably need those funds to sustain you and your family until you can secure new employment down the road. We don’t think you should unreasonably inflate your lawyer’s bank account at your household’s expense. Our market-first flat-fees don’t break the bank and come nowhere close to these contingency fee amounts. Whether you use our services or not – beware of them, they’re out there.
